Disposable Brilliance

Let’s talk about the gift of disposable brilliance we get from advanced AI chatbots like Claude and ChatGPT.

First, let’s be clear about what disposable brilliance through use of AI chatbots is not. It’s not a magic solution to all our problems. It’s not going to revolutionize every aspect of our work or personal lives overnight. It’s certainly not a replacement for human expertise and judgment. And because it has limitations in its awareness of accuracy and truth, it’s not foolproof.

I use the term to capture how we can tap into a vast pool of knowledge and broad scope of capability, use it for a specific purpose, and then set it aside until we need it again. It’s brilliant, and it’s disposable.

The key is in adjusting our expectations accordingly.

We have instant access to information and ideas, but not instant solutions. The AI can provide a starting point, but the refinement and application still rest with us.

We have a tool for enhancing our productivity, not for doing our jobs for us. It’s there to support our work, not to take it over.

We have a resource that can help us think more broadly, but not one that thinks for us. The AI can suggest new perspectives, but the critical thinking is still our responsibility.

We have a capability that’s there when we need it, but not one we should become dependent on. It’s a tool in our toolkit, not a crutch.

We have a system that can make mistakes or have biases, just like any human source of information. Verification and cross-checking are still crucial.

Benefiting from disposable brilliance comes down to using AI chat tools with intention. Need to brainstorm ideas for a project? Great, use the AI. But then take those ideas and develop them yourself. Stuck on how to phrase something in a report? The AI can help, but the final wording and tone should be yours.

It also means being comfortable and proactively seeking value with the disposable nature of these interactions. Each session with an AI is a fresh start. It may not remember your last conversation, it may not learn from your preferences over time. And that’s okay – that’s part of what makes it “disposable.”

In essence, disposable brilliance is about having vast knowledge and impressive skills at our fingertips, ready to assist us when we need it, without the expectation that it will solve all our problems or do our thinking for us. It’s a powerful resource, but one that complements rather than replaces our own skills and judgment.

Set your expectations appropriately and make the most of this tool while continuing to value and develop our own expertise. That’s the real power of disposable brilliance – not as a replacement for human intelligence, but as a catalyst for it.
